JEROME, ARIZONA
"Northern Arizona Experience" - CLICK ON ANY IMAGE for more information and design details. Make changes.
Located high on top of Cleopatra Hill (5,200 feet) between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona. This quaint town of about 400 residents today provides tourists with not only a view of the past in its numerous historic buildings, but also a number of specialty shops, restaurants and galleries. Take a walking tour of Jerome, where you'll see restored historic structures. One interesting area is the "Crib District" across the street from the English Kitchen, in a back alley where all the buildings were once part of Jerome's famous "prostitution row." The temperatures in Jerome are about 20 degrees cooler than in the Verde Valley.
Jerome was originally a copper mining camp, evolving from a few tents and shacks to a roaring mining community of mansions and Victorian homes. It was once known as the “Wickedest town in the West.” Jerome was once the fourth largest city in the Arizona Territory, the population peaking to 15,000 during the 1920’s. The mines closed in 1953. Today the town is residence to about 450 people who promote it as a historic ghost town.
