Dear Reader... This is an interpretive series of pages taken from the personal journal of Mr. JH Thomas. For over 25 years Mr. Thomas hiked, explored and photographed the limestone canyons and vicinity of northern Arizona. As a result he recorded several scientific "firsts" in archaeology regarding the activities of the ancient people we now call Sinagua. He also acquired some basic knowledge of local geology, the native plants and wildlife. It is a pleasure to present some of these observations in this format. Sincerely, John Vroom, Editor

Wupatki 1200 AD Reconstruction 07

Reconstructing the Ruin Wupatki... with the purpose of serving as a model for interpretive oil paintings. Above is a simplified animation superimposing an interpretation of the past construction over present day stabilized ruin walls.

The first side effect of this research and graphic experiments is this poster.

MANY THANKS to Dr. Chris Downum at Northern Arizona University and Peter Pilles from the Archaeology Section of the Coconino National Forest for being my generous and supportive consultants! I hope my world of art contributed to theirs of science. JHThomas

Digital Experiments 3D Modeling... Continued from Previous Page...

Update: December 14, 2001

I spent the last week remodeling my entire model based upon the new observations and information. The images I've posted below represent my latest "best guess" of the collection of rooms that made up the whole pueblo.

consult03a

View looking south. I've placed my artificial light in the sunrise position.

NOTES: 1. Remember, this is not intended to be a final illustration. Everything depicted here is simplified, left in a "blocky" condition. Texture, windows, doors, roof beams, ladders, etc. are all missing and will be dealt with in the actual painting. The purpose of these 3D drawings is to provide a visual idea of the volume relationships of the land form and the collection of rooms in the whole pueblo in its probable fullest expansion.

2. My web stats for this site are revealing that "many" people are copying these images. Because of this I have embedded my copyright into these final images. Please indulge me this. I am flattered with the interest but I do need to remind everyone that these are proprietary. They are displayed here for educational and entertainment purposes.

consult03b

VIEW from the west, showing my interpretation of the great wall that may have created a plaza-like area, certainly it was a wind break that created a protected area. Parts of this wall are still laying there out of sight.

consult03c

Probable VIEW from East North East. The highest tower room (number 36) is indicated as being four stories high, with its first floor on top of the huge two story Wupatki rock. With each story being about seven feet high and the boulder being about 20 feet high, it is possible that the total height of this tower was well over forty feet. Wupatki was a wonderful and magnificent monument to the builders' skill and purpose, in my opinion.

consult03d

And finally, this is the first image that all of this work was for... this is my perspective for the first painting. This will be superimposed (roughly speaking) over the present reality captured in my recent early morning photo below.

photocomp

This is an interesting perspective and it captures many key elements and landmarks relevant to the life of Wupatki. In the far distance Doney Mountain is visible as well as the long land form that contains Antelope Canyon and continues on out toward what is now the northern portion of Wupatki National Monument. In the middle distance is the opposite bank of Deadman Wash, comprised of thousands of huge pieces of broken moenkopi sandstone boulders, the building blocks of all the pueblos (now ruins) of this region. Other ruins still dot the lip of the cliff edge and would have been visible to the people who lived here at the main pueblo in their day. In the foreground the reconstructed amphitheater is visible and in the valley below the reconstructed ball court is barely visible. This is the community looking generally north at sunrise.

consult03e

I've manufactured this 3D view from above to help me visualize each room block compared to the floor plans I've been provided. I do not pretend that what I've done here is exact or that it represents the whole truth. There are probably parts of Wupatki that even science will never know for the evidence is gone. My goal is to provide this first painting for my client. And to allow this preparatory work to tease the professionals with my artistic interpretation of years of their scientific data translated into a whole organic image. If these drawings inspire others more qualified to proceed with better virtual renderings, I am satisfied.

Now... On to the oil painting canvas!!!
