Rascal Inquires, " If You Are Not Concerned About the Future, Then You Haven't Been Paying Attention." This, then is our advertising campaign, to contribute to your well being.
Dear Reader... This is an interpretive series of pages taken from the personal journal of Mr. JH Thomas. For over 25 years Mr. Thomas hiked, explored and photographed the limestone canyons and vicinity of northern Arizona. As a result he recorded several scientific "firsts" in archaeology regarding the activities of the ancient people we now call Sinagua. He also acquired some basic knowledge of local geology, the native plants and wildlife. It is a pleasure to present some of these observations in this format. Sincerely, John Vroom, Editor
Wupatki 1200 AD Reconstruction 06

Reconstructing the Ruin Wupatki... with the purpose of serving as a model for interpretive oil paintings. Above is a simplified animation superimposing an interpretation of the past construction over present day stabilized ruin walls.
The first side effect of this research and graphic experiments is this poster.

Digital Experiments 3D Modeling... Continued from Previous Page...
Update: December 08, 2001

At this point I've managed to create my first attempt at projecting vertical volume into floor plan shapes that are reliable. Perhaps a good start. But a few days of evaluation and some consulting sessions with Peter Pilles and Chris Downum have revealed a few errors in my assumptions. An on-site visit has also helped clarify a few big miscalculations about room height. For example:

These "transect" drawings were provided to me by Peter Pilles (above) and the NPS (below).

These were created in the 1930s by J.C. Fisher Motz. I'm told that he was an architect and was hired to do them on site during the original excavation. It is clear that they are to be relied upon. To understand them better, realize that these represent accurate "slices" cut on an east/west axis through the block of rooms. The lower drawing is several feet north of the upper drawing. Seeing these drawings and also having the accurate floor plan helps a lot!
For example, and here is my first misjudgment in my first drawings: The height of the sandstone block in the lower picture is twice as high as I assumed as I prepared my first room block drawing. My rendering is a whole story too low on the north section. The upper drawing also makes it clearer to me that the rooms were more organic and that they ambled down the terrain as they were added rather than extending parallel from each other as we build today. There were no foundations! In the end view (from the north) of my first rendering it is CLEAR that my rooms are too level with each other AND much to vertical in proportion.

Revised and updated... visualization
Now, views and proportions match better. In this composition I've shown the relationship between the topography and the mass. It fits.
We now have a better idea of what Wupatki looked like.
