Rascal Inquires, " If You Are Not Concerned About the Future, Then You Haven't Been Paying Attention." This, then is our advertising campaign, to contribute to your well being.
Dear Reader... This is an interpretive series of pages taken from the personal journal of Mr. JH Thomas. For over 25 years Mr. Thomas hiked, explored and photographed the limestone canyons and vicinity of northern Arizona. As a result he recorded several scientific "firsts" in archaeology regarding the activities of the ancient people we now call Sinagua. He also acquired some basic knowledge of local geology, the native plants and wildlife. It is a pleasure to present some of these observations in this format. Sincerely, John Vroom, Editor
Wupatki 1200 AD Reconstruction 03

Reconstructing the Ruin Wupatki... with the purpose of serving as a model for interpretive oil paintings. Above is a simplified animation superimposing an interpretation of the past construction over present day stabilized ruin walls.
The first side effect of this research and graphic experiments is this poster.

Digital Experiments... Continued from Previous Page...

Using the historical photo on the previous page as an elementary starting point I built this masonry wall panel texture in Photoshop. It does not have to be perfect as it exists only to serve two purposes: 1. To be a surface texture in my 3D rendering program and, 2. to act as a visual reference in the 3D renderings that I create as my armature for the pueblo drawing.

The important thing about this primitive brickwork drawing is that it works like a tile, which when repeated over and over wraps perfectly around any wall surface indefinitely. This makes it usable on a 3D rendered surface. Like this 3D rendering below:

Here is my first "test wall" done in Ray Dream Studio, my 3D rendering program at the time, obsolete by today's standards. Again, this is a building device ONLY. In the actual painting I can make the masonry less perfect and more like the original stone walls I'm studying. But this provides wonderful building block "clay" with which to construct something that doesn't exist. I will be able to view it from different angles and plot realistic shadows by doing it this way.
~~~~~~~~
Another construction discovery: I'm advised that the inner walls of most of the rooms were hand plastered (like our stucco) by the women ( small hand prints remain in some of the mud walls today). Mortar was used to hold the stones in Wupatki- BUT the outside walls were probably NOT plastered perfectly, like so many other pueblos. They were probaly crudely covered with mud similar to the Keet Seel pueblo. Another discovery for me! Details about roof top doorways, windows, vents, roof log beams and ladders are still for me to study and post here.
