Dear Reader... This is an interpretive series of pages taken from the personal journal of Mr. JH Thomas. For over 25 years Mr. Thomas hiked, explored and photographed the limestone canyons and vicinity of northern Arizona. As a result he recorded several scientific "firsts" in archaeology regarding the activities of the ancient people we now call Sinagua. Wupatki 1200 AD Reconstruction 01
Reconstructing the Ruin Wupatki... with the purpose of serving as a model for interpretive oil paintings. Above is a simplified animation superimposing an interpretation of the past construction over present day stabilized ruin walls.
The first side effect of this research and graphic experiments is this poster.

All of this 3D rendering work was done in Ray Dream Studio, my software at the time. This program evolved to become Carrara. Although primitive by comparison to programs today it served my purpose perfectly by providing me, the painter, with an actual model to look at of something that no longer exists. A real model. This presentation explains how I used this research to develop the poster above and subsequent paintings. Enjoy.
Summer 2001 The Wupatki Project... the beginning
After years of fascination with the ancient ruins that populate the vicinity northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona, I've decided to express my renewed painting energy in this direction. In August of 2001, while painting in the lobby of the Old Town Gallery, I decided to do a landscape that captured the colors that occur in the Wupatki region during the sumer monsoon season. Here is a photo of that four panel painting, which was purchased by Northern Arizona University for permanent display in the Wettaw Building:
This exercise got me started and I've decided to take it further. I will study and interpret our local Prehistoric Ruin called Wupatki into an original oil painting which will represent (to the best of my ability) how it appeared near the end of its greatest development, somewhere in the early part of the thirteenth century, just prior to the generally accepted abandonment. I will use these pages to record my research, input from my consultants, my digital experiments, my drawings and my working steps of the final oil paintings. I believe that this will be educational and entertaining on several levels, different for each person. Feel free to look throughout the project.
