Replacing the ABS Brake Pump on my 1990 Range Rover Classic

As mentioned on the introduction page, the ABS Pump became my first priority before I could even use the truck in a safe condition. I had to do a lot of research about what the ABS Pump does and what it takes to replace it. So, for the benefit of the next person who is faced with this assignment, here is a diary of this job:

These illustrations from various repair manuals provide some insight into the complicated and sophisticated brake system of a Classic Range Rover. These drawings are but a portion of all available, but you get the idea.

The new ABS Pump and Accumulator arrived from the Atlantic British Company, nearly $1250.00.

Here's a photo of the old one still in the truck. It is under the hood mounted over the wheel well on the driver's side (USA). This photo was taken just after it hemorrhaged and all of the brake fluid leaked out. The vehicle could not be driven until we made this repair.

Here you can see the "dead" unit on the workbench and where it came from.

A photo of the two new parts... the Accumulator and ABS Pump. The Accumulator was a new experience for me. I had to do some reading. It is apparently a kind of bladder that collects the brake fluid under pressure, storing it until you hit the brakes. The power assisted brakes are the result. It is highly recommended that you change the Accumulator at the same time you change the ABS Pump.

Here's a photo of the Accumulator installed deep beneath many wires and tubes near the firewall. What they DO NOT TELL YOU nor show in any of the illustrations is that the bolts that mount the unit are ONLY accessible from below, behind a metal panel up inside the fender of the truck. It took nearly two hours just to get to them. Definitely a factory operation very inconvenient after market. This became a bigger job than installing the ABS Pump.

Another step unique to this British marvel is that the electronic relays, you get new ones with these parts, go under the driver's seat.

Here's the new ABS Pump installed. The brake system has been bled and everything is working fine. A few weeks later we installed all new brake pads and new rear brake roters. This system is now totally new and it feels good to drive it knowing the integrity of the braking system is sound.
