Dear Reader... This is an interpretive series of pages taken from the personal journal of Mr. JH Thomas. For over 25 years Mr. Thomas hiked, explored and photographed the limestone canyons and vicinity of northern Arizona. As a result he recorded several scientific "firsts" in archaeology regarding the activities of the ancient people we now call Sinagua. He also acquired some basic knowledge of local geology, the native plants and wildlife. It is a pleasure to present some of these observations in this format. Sincerely, John Vroom, Editor

Ancient Sinagua Petroglyph of Giving Birth (?)

On one of Thomas's more inspired hikes, he "was led" to this remarkable glyph.

Midsummer in Thomas's favorite canyon. The alluvial mound you see in this photo is covered with ancient stone tool making flakes and arrow points, along with a couple metate stones.

As we have indicated within these reports on several occasions, this area is replete with evidence of many people living here in prehistory for hundreds of years. One cannot walk around here without realizing that we are on their former homes and community. At this writing, Mr. Thomas has personally found and recorded over 400 ruin and rock art sites in this vicinity. He has found everything from one room ruins to fourteen room pueblos with pithouses and millions of artifacts, including sea shells. The volume of material alone demands respect.

One of the most fascinating rock art panels that Thomas ever recorded is this:

In a sheltered alcove there is this large slanted sandstone table-like surface with an amazing pictorial mural pecked into it. It is obvious that this is a story.

An accurate interpretation is impossible. But it appears to be a possible human birthing scene (even this may not be right). But whatever it is, there are spirals of different texture coming from the hand of the individual as well as a larger spiral of "energy" coming from or entering the shape we assume to be a fetus. Is this a depiction of the "breath of life" entering the child at birth?

We can only speculate. But the impact of the panel is unforgettable. FYI

For Thomas, the discovery of this place is part of the mystery itself. For this is one of those unexplainable experiences he often reports. He found this alcove because he followed the "sound" of beating drums and the chanting of male voices.
