Reflections on the Weather
Our awareness of how the weather is changing was indelibly imprinted onto our consciousness by Al Gore's presentation entitled, "An Inconvenient Truth." Sadly, as evidence-based as this movie and its facts are, it has become politicized into believers and critics where it now serves their ambitions. The people who lived at the base of Mount Vesuvius probably behaved in a similar fashion.
Hundreds of global events, like the Katrina Hurricane, supported the report and demonstrated how weather is now epidodical with extremes in all directions.
Nevertheless, while the politicians, religious fundmentalists and biased scientists debate the truth of the issue, nature marches on. Here's a photo of the recent record setting dust storm in Phoenix, Arizona. As individuals we must live with and deal with the reality on the ground regardless of what our leaders tell us.
2010 was a year of such events here in Northern Arizona. It started with one of the largest snow storms in history. Homeowners had it at their doorstep.
Wetter, colder, hotter, dryer, take your pick. Normal is out the window. The unexpected is now the thing to expect. Winter was unusual this 2011. Spring was longer and colder than usual. Birds built their nests up to six weeks later than normal. Garden flowers stayed dormant for a month longer. We all knew it was unusual. Diciduous trees remained leafless til June.
Then on Father's Day in June 2010, although started by a human, the largest wildfire in our regional history occurred, the Schulze Wildfire. Hundreds of photos of this fire and the subsequent floods are on the internet if you want more evidence. These events cause inconvenience, expense and disruption of normal flows of living necessities. In many cases, people living in the path of the fire and flood suffered great losses. A young girl actually drowned in the first rainstorm that ripped through the previously settled neighborhood.
Then, in October the impossible happened. Northern Arizona experienced six tornadoes that ripped through the small community of Belmont, Arizona.
So, while the world is simultaneously experiencing tsunamis, eathquakes and volcanoes, while our leaders pursue war and solutions to our man-made bankruptcy, we must remain watchful and THINK.
People who manage to live off the grid, although more resiliant by nature, must still be aware of these disasters and emergencies. Wells can dry up because of weather. Drought can kill the garden. It all comes down to food sooner or later.
