The Grand Canyon in Arizona is known as a living laboratory displaying the oldest rock formations on earth. Science, art and adventure come together in this magnificant place. This page presents some elementary information about Grand Canyon geology. JVroom
Jan 2011... In a recent visit to the south rim Grand Canyon Village we discovered the newest interpretive exhibit. Instantly, we realized that this is the same information that Thomas was involved in many years ago with Northern Arizona University. Some of the Grand Canyon geology illustrations on this web site were created by him subsequent to that assignment. In memory of that highly motivated project Thomas would like us to publish herein some photos from this new and excellent exhibit. Enjoy.... JV-webmaster
According to the National Park Service-
The Trail of Time is an interpretive walking timeline that focuses on Grand Canyon vistas and rocks and invites visitors to ponder, explore, and understand the magnitude of geologic time and the stories encoded by Grand Canyon rock layers and landscapes. The exhibit follows the existing paved rim trail on the South Rim of Grand Canyon between Yavapai Observation Station and Grand Canyon Village and is marked by brass markers every meter, representing one million years of time. Viewing tubes and other interpretive materials help visitors connect the rocks visible in Grand Canyon to their place along the geologic timeline. The exhibit is part of Grand Canyon National Park's efforts to improve and integrate geosciences into interpretative programs at the Grand Canyon with links to other parks in the region. The physical Trail of Time is supplemented with an electronic web-based component called the "Virtual Trail of Time, found at http://tot.unm.edu/." The Trail of Time employs culturally responsive and inclusive content and is part of a research program in informal science education aimed at understanding and improving public cognition of geologic time - the connection between human time scales and the million year heartbeat of the Earth.
The "Trail of Time" is accompanied by the massive 3D signs comprised of slabs of the actual stones from within the canyon that the exhibit describes.
Along the trail these gorgeous porcelain interpretive signs explain the portion of the exhibit you are observing along the nearly one mile walk.
These porcelain signs are filled with luxurious photos and illustrations.
You can see from the illustration on this sign that the "Trail of Time" goes from the Grand Canyon Village along the rim trail to Yavapai Geology Museum.
Each interpretive "station" is accompanied by a professionally manufactured pipe sight that points directly at the specific type of stone in the Grand Canyon, that is being described by the illustrations and text on the sign. This is a living classroom.
Spaced along this entire presentation actual examples of the stone type being discussed in the moment are mounted at the edge of the trail.
