This online gallery was started by Mr. Thomas as a place to display his early and current work. At the time he was doing oil painting demonstrations in the lobby of the Old Town Gallery in Flagstaff, Arizona. As webmaster, it is now my assignment to keep it organized and connected to sources where his work is being published. Enjoy, John Vroom

Photo ©JHThomas... Today Tuzigoot is a rebuilt system of pueblo room blocks situated on a hilltop running on a north south alignment, in a wonderful proximity of the Verde River.

Tuzigoot - The Oil Painting ...... Step by Step:

05/30/02...

tuzigoot01

Beginning the underpainting. I'm still working in the lobby of Old Town Gallery.

06/06/02...

Finishing the underpainting, then starting the sky with final color. Everything at this point is too dark, just like all my paintings. I underpaint with the color I want seen beneath the final color. A comment: This scene is looking west and will have the mid-morning sun behind the viewer.

06/14/02...

tuzigoot03

The sky is about 80% finished, and other textures have begun.

06/21/02...

tuzigoot04

It's not apparent from this photo just how much has been done this week!. I've repainted over 75% of the entire surface with the first subtle tones that will build toward the final textures.

Here's a couple small close up shots of how things are going. The picture above shows how I'm developing the river rock plus stucco surface. The picture below shows the early development of the gravel and stones in the nearest foreground.

Doorways and landscaping have begun.

I'm very disappointed in the fact that this low rez digital photo doesn't really indicated the many hours of texture work I've done on the hillside and the pueblo walls since the previous picture. This is one of those large sensitive assignments that is only appreciated by viewing the original!

Finally, a fairly decent photo of the painting at this stage of development. (I have a new camera) Amongst tons of detail work that doesn't show in this photo you will see the beginning of a "ramada" cover.

07/23/02...

tuzigoot08

I finally managed a close up photo of the painting which helps show the crumbled and layered old limestone rock and gravel that makes up the knob hill which supports the Tuzigoot Pueblo. This is about three weeks work!According to the research papers I acquired from the Museum of Northern Arizona, very little EVER grew on the hill itself because of the extremely high saline content of the soil. All Sinagua agriculture had to be done in the river bottom land below, and there was lots of it.

The FINISHED PAINTING...
