Why spend hours or days developing your own 3D mesh models from scratch when you can download and adapt existing ones? Many times this is the practical solution. All you have to do is match the prebuilt format with the software you are using. Download mesh models, textures and other resources from created by fellow professionals and move on.

By using resources such as these you can save yourself hours of investment. Often, as well, you will learn something about modeling that you didn't know. Complete mesh models with and without textures are waiting for you.
Use their textures / shaders / or create your own, add your lights and other elements and take control of your own scene. Just read the license to see if the item can be used in the way you plan. There are some restrictions.
This solution is perfect when dealing with low budgets and time constraints. Many a project was saved by installing a prebuilt model at the last minute.
Some models are built in such a way that they are posable within your software, thereby adding even more originality to your composition.
There is nothing unprofessional about this and it even contributes to the income of another professional CG artist. In fact, activity has developed into a new business model placing high quality models in the "ease of clip art" category.
Using free or prebuilt resources will save you time and cash. It certainly can free you up to concentrate on the project at hand.
And, as mentioned before, this is an excellent self teaching tool. Everyone's model contains something that is enlightening you a viewer. Getting inside the head of how someone else models is often extremely useful. It can make you a better artist.
