Creating Textures and 3D Dimension in Photoshop
The following simple step by step images with captions give you an overview of the process behind the creation of this 3D Egyptian symbol. I hope you enjoy these behind the scenes close ups into the process and methods.
The Sacred Egyptian Scarab Beetle
This symbol appears in many forms.
Items found in King Tut's tomb.
From so much inspiration this exercise begins...
Starting with Illustrator outlines.
This project began in Adobe® Illustrator 8.0. Mr. Thomas created these simple outlines representing the stone inlay portions of this scarab emblem. The vector outlines were imported and rastered into Photoshop creating this basic template. Basic solid colors were assigned as fill and outline to provide the template below.
Here you can see how the WAND TOOL was used to select specific solid colors and SAVE them as separate alpha channel masks. Each color required a mask. In this case we are going to build a metallic gold jewelry-like rim, textured turquoise stone and red coral stone inlays.
This is where we utilize one of the most useful Photoshop Plugins ever devised, namely SuperBlade Pro by Flaming Pear Software.
One of the lesser known abilities of this program is its ability to perform its magic within a mask, or alpha channel. By opening the previously created mask (frisket) for the metallic outline, and some experimenting, we can arrive at this terrific hand-tooled bright gold embossed appearance. When we get the result we seek we SAVE and apply.
Here is a screen shot showing the application of the metallic gold outline and coral red inlay. This process continues until all the soloid colors are replaced with texture.
One by one the temporary solid blue shapes, selected previously and saved as separate alpha channels, are filled n with a new dimensional shape.
Here, of course, is a snapshot of the fnished illustration, using Photoshop, plugin and some of the items we imprint with it. It is very popular.
